Pellegrini: We won the title more stylishly

PELLEGRINI-TITLEMANCHESTER, April 4- Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says that title-winning Chelsea are just a less stylish version of his team last year.

The Blues clinched enough points to claim the Premier League trophy against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, when a solid defensive display made Eden Hazard’s first-half penalty the only goal of the game.

In the following match, while Chelsea celebrated, Manchester City fought to a 1-0 win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane thanks to Sergio Aguero’s strike.

When asked whether he was the right man for the job at Etihad Stadium, Pellegrini said: “I do not want to answer that question.

“I think Chelsea did this year exactly what we did last year,” he said. “They won the Premier League and they won the Capital One Cup. We did exactly the same last year, scoring more goals in another style.

“I think it is important for the Premier League and it is important for the fans to play attractive football. That’s why I just said that we won playing another style.

“We did exactly the same that Chelsea did this year, but we scored last year 158 goals and in this whole season 101 in the Premier League, 27 in the Capital One Cup.

“This team continues as the most scoring team. That side is important, to continue winning in that sense.

“This team always has a challenge for next season. I think that next year we must improve because we lost too many easy points this year.”

Aguero’s 22nd goal of the season against Spurs makes him the league’s top scorer and gives City a tally of 71, the highest in the league but only two more than Chelsea.

With three games left to play, City are one point away from guaranteeing a top-four finish, which they can achieve in their next game against QPR at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
