NAIROBI, APRIL 23 – Just two days after officially launching Gor Bread, the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions are already baking the cash, raking in Sh130,000 (USD1382.79) daily according to club officials.
Cash-strapped Gor entered a deal with Nakuru based Good Bread Kenya to manufacture K’Ogalo branded loaves and in following the Lord’s Prayer, the partnership is already giving the KPL leaders their daily bread.
Gor are receiving Sh1 from every loaf sold and assistant secretary general, Ronald Ngala told Capital Sport the novel sponsorship deal in local football is pushing 130,000 pieces of bread since Monday’s launch by former Prime Minister and patron, Rt. Hon Raila Odinga.
In a tale reminiscent of Jesus’ parable of feeding the hungry by multiplying five loaves of bread and five fish, the club will rake close to Sh4.8m (USD 51,056.78) monthly and a staggering by local standards, Sh57m (USD606,299.31) per annum if shoppers continue digging in to Gor Bread at this rate.
“This is the way to go and the selling is going up as we speak we are getting Sh130, 000 per day so there is a possibility for the figures to rise up to Sh200, 000 a day. The company is set to spread its supply to Nairobi but at the moment it’s only available in Western Kenya and it’s doing very great.
“We are still in talks with other potential sponsors but I can say we are heading on the right direction. We are set to launch the player’s welfare and Sacco,” Ngala munched over the numbers as Gor found a sponsor since their deal with Tuzo Milk lapsed in 2013.
To stem misappropriation of funds; Gor will be conducting monthly audit before the 10th of every month the official added.
Capital Sport has established the two-time back to back KPL titleholders require at least Sh70m (USD744, 578.1) per annum to effectively compete in the domestic top flight, continental and regional tournament whilst fulfilling their obligations to playing staff.
The club has been malnourished financially for two seasons and last month, the begging bowl for alms was out to enable them honour the return leg of the CAF Champions League first round tie in Congo Brazzaville where hosts AC Leopards completed a 0-2 aggregate win to eliminate them at the second hurdle.
But Gor may have stumbled on the bread of life with Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president, Sam Nyamweya wasting no time to cut himself a slice of the development.
“This has for a long time been my prayer that our community based clubs should get sponsorship so that they can be able to manage their affairs and welfare of players.
“If the leaders of the Luhya community pulled together, AFC Leopards will have a strong sponsor,” Nyamweya toasted in a statement.
Now, if anyone can come up with Gor Margarine, Gor Peanut Butter and Gor Plum Jam to accompany the bread?
