Wenger: ‘We don’t need another striker’

WENGER-PUMALONDON, July 22- Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that he has no plans to sign a striker this summer, following the high-profile arrival of forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

Olivier Giroud is set to remain the Gunner’s first-choice striker next season while Joel Campbell, following his impressive World Cup campaign with Costa Rica, is finally eligible for a UK work permit after spending several seasons out on loan.

Reports had suggested that AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli was a target, but Milan chief Adriano Galliani told reporters on Sunday that no enquiry from the Gunners had been received.

The addition of Sanchez and the return to fitness of Theo Walcott give Wenger options in attack, while young striker Yaya Sanogo could see more game time in his second season at the club.

“Up front we don’t need any more,” he is quoted as telling reporters by the Evening Standard. “It’s not especially for numbers.”

However, Wenger is planning on strengthening in other positions in his squad this summer, with reports in France suggesting a fee for Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina has been agreed with Nice.

“We need a goalkeeper for sure and, after that, it depends on how our midfielders get through without injuries until the start of the season,” he added. “Maybe at centre-back we’ll still bring one in.”

Wenger had previously admitted that club captain Thomas Vermaelen may leave Arsenal this summer, amid persistent reports of interest in the defender from Manchester United.
