NAIROBI, Kenya, September 24 – The start of the 2013 hockey African Cup of Nations scheduled for Nairobi could delay following the Westgate Mall attacks.
According to Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) vice-chairperson Elynah Shiveka, the tournament that was set to kick-off Thursday at Nairobi’s City Park and has attracted nine entries could be pushed back by two or three days.
“The tournament might delay by two or three days due to the situation in the country, all is set for the African championship, we are just waiting for the fixtures to be released,” the official told Capital Sport.
Four men’s and five ladies’ teams have confirmed participation in the championship that will see the top two teams in each gender qualify for 2014 World Cup to staged in Netherlands with Egypt and Nigeria withdrawing from the championships.
The national teams are currently at the Kenya Education Management Institute for residential training.
South Africa are the defending champions for both categories, having won the last event in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe in September 2011.
