NAIROBI, Kenya, December 14 – Get texting or log on to support your favourite local team for the side to stand a chance of contesting for the mouth watering $10,000 (Sh850,000) one-off pay out in the inaugural Kenya Power Charity Cup that will be held in February.
The competition where the runners up will pocket $6,000 (Sh510,000) was launched in Nairobi on Thursday with the four teams to take part to be decided by the number of text and online votes received by January 24.
Speaking at the launch Kenya Power CEO Joseph Njoroge noted they had hatched the event to sell their corporate social responsibility.
“Modern society expects business to always behave in a socially responsible and sustainable manner; and to give back to their communities on whom they depend for their livelihoods” he added.
The one day tournament kicks of with participation of 16 Tusker Premier League and six from Division One.
The public will vote for their favorite teams by texting the team’s code to 2542 with those that receive the highest number of ballots featuring in the February 3 event at Nairobi’s Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
Football Kenya Federation and Kenya Red Cross Society are the other supporters of the event with federation chief, Sam Nyamweya, noting the tournament will go a long way in promoting grassroots football.
Nyamweya appealed to fans to participate vigorously in the voting through texting in support for their favourite teams.
Funds for the Charity Cup will be generated through the SMS line that will be charged at a premium rate of Sh 20 and tickets sales of the main event.
The 3rd and 4th teams will walk home with $2,000 (Sh 170,000).
