School nominees for Soyas shorlisted

NAIROBI, Kenya, November 26- Five schools have been shortlisted to contest for top honours in their category at the December 6 Safaricom Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

According to the Panel of Judges, nominees in girls’ category are Malava volleyball team, Kerugoya hockey, Tartar football, Shimba Hills volleyball and Obambo netball teams.

Boys’ candidates include St Anthony’s hockey, Kakamega 15s rugby, Laiser Hill basketball, Cheptil volleyball and Mukumu sides.

Malava were nominated for clinching both East African and National secondary school titles for second year running.

Kerugoya did not strike gold at the Nationals but went ahead to clinch East African Games hockey trophy for fourth time in five years.

Tartar once again defied harsh social, political and economic hardships to emerge the best team in football by winning the domestic crown.

The Pokot-based school could have clinched the East African Games in Bujumbura Burundi but biased officiating saw them end in bronze position.

Obambo entered the list of nominees for finishing second at the nationals and fifth in the regional event.

At position five, Obambo were the best placed team from outside Uganda in the discipline that has been dominated by that country’s teams.

The boys’ category appears very tight as four of the nominees clinched trophies at Nationals and Regional championships.

St Anthony’s hockey team, Cheptil volleyball, Kakamega rugby 15s and Laiser Hill basketball were victorious at both stages.

Mukumu made the cut for finishing runners-up in boys’ volleyball contest on their maiden appearance on the national stage.

They then qualified for East African Games but finished outside medal bracket.

Mukumu was also nominated as two of their players won Kenya continental slot during Africa Zone Five beach volleyball qualifiers in Uganda mid this year.

While releasing the nominees, SOYA Secretary, Simon Chebon explained that various factors would be considered when picking the best teams for season 2012.

Chebon said that performance was the key parameter in determining winning teams.

He said, however, that in cases where candidates tie then they shall consider other factors like variety of sports a particular school undertakes, consistency in performance, conditions under which a team train under and general discipline of the school.
