Torquay decline to renew Taiwo’s contract

LONDON, England, May 24- Harambee Stars forward Taiwo Atieno has parted ways with English Football League Two side, Torquay United after failing to land a new deal at The Gulls.

Torquay manager Martin Ling has chose not to offer Atieno a new deal as the he reshapes his squad for next season according to reports from the outfit.

The British born Kenyan international with four caps under his belt lost out to fellow forward Ryan Davis who was given the nod to continue at The Gulls who just missed out at promotion to League after losing to Cheltenham Town in the play-offs.

“We have got the best out of Tai Atieno and it came down to a flat choice between Tai and Ryan Jarvis. I feel I’ve had the peak of Tai but not had the peak of Ryan Jarvis, and I feel that Jarvis will be better.

“I only had the money to keep one of the two and that was the big issue. It comes down to a financial issue and you can’t keep everybody,” Ling told the club’s official website.

Journeyman Atieno who joined Torquay last year has made 43 appearances for The Gulls, scoring six times and end of his contract means he has to shop for his 15th outfit.

All his Stars appearance have been from the bench having made his debut in June 2009 when Stars played Mozambique.

He was recalled for the first leg of the 2013 Africa Nations Cup knock-out qualifier against Togo where he made another cameo appearance as Kenya beat Togo 2-1 in March.

It is not clear whether head coach Francis Kimanzi has the nomadic striker in his plans for the June 2014 World Cup qualifier against Malawi after he declined to name the foreign based players in the squad on Tuesday.
