NAIROBI, Kenya, December 19- Kenya Commercial Bank registered a 25-15 win over Nondescript RUFC, closing out the calendar year unbeaten as the Kenya Cup league breaks for the festive season.
This match at the Lions Den in Ruaraka saw the bankers go 5-0 ahead after only 22 seconds, when winger Darwin Mukidza grounded the ball after his team’s first phase attack.
They would go 10-0 up when Eric Kabii, at the end of a rolling maul from a line out deep in Nondies territory went over.
Nondies would make a foray into KCB territory, forcing their hosts into an infringement. Simon Chege would drill home the penalty, slashing the deficit to 10-3.
With Nondies on the under the cosh, Head Coach Kanyi Gitonga threw on Derrick Wamalwa, Edwin Alubaka, Ken Nyagetuba and Teddy Salano who had all been left on the bench.
They would steady the ship but could not prevent prop forward Sidney Mwai from going over, again from a maul with Fabian Olando converting for a 20-3 lead.
Former KCB player Wamalwa would go over, seeing his side trail 20-8 at the interval.
A tentative start to the second half saw both sides engage cautious, but it was KCB who had the upper hand despite Gitonga’s side remaining competitive.
With the half drawing on, it was the home side who saw more ball but thrice Olando’s decision making, opting to keep possession when it was more practical to commit his marker and release his support player cost the bankers try scoring opportunities.
Ian Indimuli’s try was just reward for the Lions pressure, his bonus point try giving them a 25-8 before Wamalwa’s last gasp consolation try for Nondies saw the match end 25-15.
Nakuru inflicted a second defeat in three matches to hosts Impala RFC, beating them 22-18 at the Impala Club while Mwamba registered a 64-8 win over Kisumu RFC at the Kisumu Polytechnic grounds.
Quins and Homeboyz were not in action after their opponents, Strathmore and Mean Machine engaged in the Kenya University Games currently ongoing in Ruaraka.
