Chicharito in new five-year Utd deal

LONDON, England, October 24 – Mexico striker Javier Hernandez has signed a new five-year contract with Manchester United that will keep him at the club until 2016, the Premier League champions announced on Monday.

Hernandez, nicknamed ‘Chicharito’, joined United from Guadalajara in the summer of 2010 and enjoyed a superb first season, netting 20 goals in all competitions as United won the league and reached the Champions League final.

“Playing for Manchester United has been a dream come true for me,” he said.

“I never expected my first year to go so well and I’m delighted to commit my future to United.

“To win a title and appear in a Champions League final was fantastic.

“I’m looking forward to helping my team-mates as we bid to win more trophies for this great club.”

United coach Sir Alex Ferguson said he was delighted to have secured Hernandez’s long-term future.

“The last player I remember making an impact as big and as quickly as Javier is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and he reminds me of Ole a lot,” said Ferguson.

“His talent for creating space in the box and his finishing ability mark him out as a natural goalscorer.

“Off the pitch, he is a pleasure to manage. He works very hard and is a popular member of the squad.”

Hernandez, 23, has made eight appearances for United in the league this season, scoring three goals.

The news of his new deal came less than 24 hours after United’s 6-1 humbling at home to Manchester City in the Premier League, which allowed City to pull five points clear at the top of the table.
