KISUMU, Kenya, August 24th – Lasalle Youth versus JMJ Academy headlines Thursday’s quarter final fixtures of the COPA Coca-Cola National Finals in Kisumu.
Group A winners Ambira High face Ainul Qamar, Gituru High School take on Mombwo and Mombasa High School lock horns with Chavakali Secondary.
Lasalle beat Taqwa FC 2-1 in their Group C match on Wednesday at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground with goals from David Njoroge and Victor Kimani.
Njoroge put his team ahead with a header but Taqwa responded in style when Abdinoor Wario raced clear and lobbed the ball above Lasalle substitute keeper Kevin Ndegwa to make it 1-1 to the delight of the fans who were clearly behind the team from Isiolo.
However, a mistake from Taqwa’s Ramadhan Ali who switched from keeper to defence proved costly when he headed the ball into Victor Mwangi’s path and the unforgiving Lasalle captain buried the ball home to seal his team’s victory.
Mwangi leads the scoring chart with four goals after hitting a hat-trick against Ainul Qamar during his team’s first match and he is now in the driving seat for the coveted top scorer’s award.
Mombasa managed to weather a late fight back from Mwombo who they beat 2-1. Striker Yusuf Abdulhalim broke the deadlock two minutes into the second half by smashing the ball into the roof of the Mwombo net for a 1-0 lead.
Shef Ali extended Mombasa’s lead to 2-0 ten minutes from time with a header from a corner before Baris Ngeno brought Mombwo back into the game with a late strike but the Coast Boys held on for the win.
