Ambira off to winning start

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 22 – A brace from Rodgers Ayaro helped Ambira High School beat Chavakali High 3-0 in the opening match of the COPA Coca-Cola Finals on Sunday in Kisumu.

Ayaro gave his team a 1-0 lead with a well taken strike in the 20th minute despite Chavakali’s early dominance at the Jomo Kenyatta Sports Ground. The lanky striker doubled his team’s lead 20 minutes later with another thunderous shot that left opposing keeper George Musale rooted to the spot.

The boys from Siaya went on to miss several chances throughout the first half. They came out in the second half with renewed urgency as Griffin Ouma consolidated his team’s lead with a goal two minutes into the second half.

Ambira will be back in action on Monday against Nairobi’s JMJ Academy at 4pm. In Monday’s other matches, Gituru High from Central A face Mombasa United at 9am in a Group B clash while Lasalle Youth take on Group C rivals Ainul Qamar at 11am.

Changes were made to the qualification structure following the exclusion of Friends Bwake and Makindu United who fielded ineligible players. The two top teams from all three pools proceed automatically to the quarter finals.

They will be joined by the first and second best losers within the three pools.
