TOKYO, January 27 – Borussia Dortmund sensation Shinji Kagawa has left Japan's squad at the Asian Cup in Qatar with a broken foot ahead of their final against Australia, the Japan Football Association said Thursday.
The 21-year-old midfielder broke a right metatarsal bone in Japan’s semi-final win over South Korea on Tuesday, the association said.
He missed training on Wednesday morning and a scan at a hospital revealed the extent of his injury, the association said.
The last-four match ended in a 3-0 penalty shoot-out victory for Japan following a 2-2 draw after extra-time. They will face Australia on Saturday in a bid to win a record fourth continental title.
Kagawa was to return to Germany via Switzerland late afternoon Thursday after a flight from Doha, the association said.
In Japan’s 3-2 Asian Cup quarter-final win over hosts Qatar he struck twice and set up the Blue Samurais’ third.
The attacking midfielder has become a star in the Bundesliga since arriving from J-League Cerezo Osaka in mid-2010, when he failed to make the Japan squad for the World Cup in South Africa, where they reached the last 16.
He has scored eight goals in 17 Bundesliga matches for Dortmund, making him the club’s current joint top scorer.
