NAIROBI, Kenya, August 17 –Blacktown are the 2010 Sprite Slam basketball Nyanza champions after beating Kenya Re 52-35, in a tough match that saw both teams fighting to outdo each other on the score board.
The game was played at Jomo Kenyatta Sports Grounds where fans cheered their favourite teams through out the game. Together with the title Blacktown took home, a cash prize of Sh20,000. Kenya Re took home Sh10,000.
The team had shown dominance in their pool where they won all the matches during the 2 days tournament. Romanov O’Connor of Blacktown was declared the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
The ladies finals were between Blades and Stingers, where Stingers edged out Blades by 2 baskets to win the game 19-15 and win the ladies title of 2010 Sprite Slam Nyanza.
They also took home a cash prize of Sh20,000. The Most Valuable Player was Joyce Misita. Blades took home Sh10,000.
During the Slam Dunk contest, Moses Wanjala was named the Slam Dunk King Sprite Slam 2010 Nyanza Province.
Nyanza Province displayed lots of talent and the five top talented players who will now form the Nyanza Province team, that proceeds to Nairobi for the National finals in Mid September was named.
The best three players from Kenya will form part of the All African Star Team which will then proceed to the USA for a boot camp at the home of the NBA.
A team of talent scouts from the Kenya Basketball Federation are on the ground identifying the talent.
This is the second year that Sprite Slam has been activated in Kenya and Kisumu city kicked off for the tournament.
