1998: LOW – Sent-off for kicking out at Argentina’s Diego Simeone in a match England lose on penalties. Villified by British press and English fans.

1999: HIGH – Helps United complete treble of FA Cup, Premier League and Champions League.

2000: HIGH – Appointed England captain by stand-in manager Peter Taylor.

2004: LOW – Misses England’s first penalty in a quarter-final shoot-out defeat to Euro 2004 hosts Portugal.

2004: LOW – Deliberately fouls Ben Thatcher in World Cup qualifier against Wales which earns him a suspension for a trip to Azerbaijan.

2006: LOW – As England captain limps off in World Cup quarter-final against Portugal. Cries on bench. England lose on penalties. Day after steps down as England captain.

2006: LOW – Dropped from new manager Steve McClaren’s first England squad.

2009: LOW – Criticised for lack of commitment to Galaxy by club captain Landon Donovan.

2009: LOW – Sent-off in Galaxy’s defeat by the Seattle Sounders.
