Copa comes to the boil

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 6 – The clash between Coast and Western province will kick off the final leg of the COPA Coca Cola under-17 tournament on Saturday.

Rift Vallley will lock horns with Central province in the other Group B while North Eastern take on Nyanza and Eastern face off with Nairobi’s City Stadium.

“We reduced the teams this year to eight for logistical reasons. The first two teams in each pool go the semis for a place in the final next Saturday,” said KPL spokesperson Gerald Chege.

The teams are currently preparing at the KCCT campus in Mbagathi where there are receiving specialized training under the tutelage of renowned coaches.

“The challenge rests with us in finding ways to nurture this budding talent and contributing towards raising the standards of Kenyan football,” added Chege.

The finals will also be used to select the 2010 Kenya COPA Coca Cola Dream team which will travel to South Africa for a chance to play in the Africa COPA Coca-Cola tournament.

A three panel made up of Nevile Pudo, Leonard Saleh and Gabriel Njoroge have been charged with choosing the team that will head to South Africa.

The winning team will receive Sh500,000, runners up will get Sh250,000 while third place will be rewarded with Sh100,000.
