Township clinch Eastern crown

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 5 – Muslim Township from Machakos are the COPA Coca-Cola Eastern Province winners after edging out Athi River Youth 5-4 on penalties in a highly charged match that was played in heavy rain.

In the girl’s category, Matuu Girls took the top position after thrashing Ntunene of Meru Girls 4-1 in a thrilling match played at Machakos Teachers College.

In other matches, Malivani Primary School of Makueni beat Kitui 12 Stars 4-2, while Muslim Township beat Kithirune of Meru 1-0.

Malivani were later mauled by Muslim Township 6-0 and Kitui 12 Stars were thrashed 4-2 by Athi River Youth.

In the girls matches Kyanika Primary School of Mwingi was edged out by Matuu Girls 4-5 on penalties while Ntunene beat Machakos Girls 4-1.
In Nyeri, the action centered around Ruringu Stadium where Githurai Youth emerged the Central Province winners.

The Thika based team beat Gituru Boys High School 6-5 on penalties.

In the girls’ category, Thika Queens were crowned the provincial winners after thrashing, Kariua girls of Maragwa 5-0.

In other matches played in the day, Gituru Boys High School beat Mutira Youth 2-1 through goals scored by A. Chege and E. Maina in the 3rd and 23rd minutes respectively.

Mutira’s sole goal was scored by C. Muthee in the 25th minute.

Githurai Youth had earlier played with Gatunyu Youth and had thrashed them 3-0, through goals scored by Ephantus Wambugu who scored a brace and a strike from Lucas Pipi in the 24th minute.

In the girls matches Thika queens had earlier tharshed Karoti of Kirinyaga 4-1 and Kariua beat Gitingi 3-0
A number of football stars discovered from last COPA have been enlisted by some of the top clubs playing in the premier league.

2009 COPA players like Daniel Mwaura, Emmanuel Tostao, and Yusuf Ali have also had an opportunity to represent Kenya in various friendly matches in Bahrain, Egypt and Norway.

They were also involved in the under 17 Africa football championships in Sudan.
