Week two of KPL

NAIROBI, Kenya, February 26 – The absence of defending champions Sofapaka and AFC Leopards may take some of the sheen of this weekend’s KPL fixtures but for the rest of the competition the season is well under way.Former champions Mathare United will be out to prove that their draw against Nairobi City Stars was just a blip with a positive result against Chemelil Sugar at City Stadium.

“If we can build on the positives that I saw over the weekend, I don’t think we should worry when we take on Chemelil on Saturday,” said Mathare coach Francis Kimanzi on Thursday.

Kimanzi will be hoping their thriller against Stars will not have taken alot out of his squad especially with an upcoming midweek fixture against Gor Mahia at Nyayo Stadium.

United’s attack should revolve around their midfield axis that includes the sibling duo of Titus and Simeon Mulama and Kevin Kimani and act as the supply line to Andrew Tololwa and Paul Abembo upfront.

Bukhungu Stadium is the setting for an intriguing match up between Western Stima and Posta Rangers.

Rangers are still reeling from their introduction to the KPL courtesy of a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of league leaders Tusker FC and a visit to one of the fortresses of Kenyan football is the last thing they needed this early in the season.

Stima who are usually one of the season pacesetters will be eager to get their season going after last week’s barren draw with Gor and would not be blamed for fancying a visit from the postmen.

Kogalo travel to Oserian to take on Ulinzi who are out to build on their 1-0 victory over Chemelil.

Gideon Ochieng’s side are regarded as favourites going by the arsenal at his disposal with the likes of George Odhiambo, Peter Opiyo and Ibrahim Kitawi eager to produce a repeat of their sterling form last season.

On Sunday, league new boys Mahakama FC who obviously will be buoyed by their positive start last weekend have a much tougher task against Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB).

The bankers carved AFC apart in the last ten minutes with two goals through Daniel Waweru and Jacob Omuse and more of the same will be o the agenda.
