NAIROBI, Kenya, February 4- Zedekiah 'Zico' Otieno has been appointed technical director of Gor Mahia FC.The former Harambee Stars defender returns to the club where he made his name both as a player and a coach and has been charged with advising the team on various aspects regarding its performance once the season gets underway.
“I will be responsible for analyzing matches for both Gor Mahia and the opposition as well as coming up with strategies for the next game,” said Otieno who coached Chemelil Sugar to tenth place last season.
Otieno said that he is looking forward to working with ‘Kogalo’ head coach Gideon Ochieng going by their long standing relationship.
“Gideon is a long time of friend of mine and we even played together at Gor. He’s the one who actually forwarded my name to the club officials so I see no problem working with him,” said Otieno
The former Stars assistant coach believes that there is no difference between Gor and defending Kenya Premier League (KPL) champions Sofapaka and is confident that ‘Kogalo’ can clinch the title.
“If you look at last season Sofapaka won 16 matches while Gor won 15. So we have a good team here,” said Otieno.
Gor is the second club to appoint an individual in charge of technical matters after its arch rivals AFC Leopards appointed Gilbert Selebwa as technical operations chief.
Gor who finished fifth on the KPL standings open their campaign against Western Stima followed by two tough encounters against Ulinzi and former champions Mathare United on successive weekends.
The club signed up 12 players for the upcoming season including Andrew Ongwae from Nairobi City Stars and Michael Ochieng from Sofapaka.
The club’s technical committee said that they will unveil an assistant coach who will also act as the goalkeeping coach in due course.
Jolawi Ogodo is the team manager assisted by Maurice Ouma while Sammy Ogutu has been appointed team doctor.
