NAIROBI, Kenya June 17– Olympic marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru has confirmed his participation in this year’s Safaricom Marathon to be held in Lewa on June 27th.
Last year’s Sports Man of the Year who recently set the London marathon course record of 2:05:10 is set to run for the first time in the unique that has attracted a record field of over 1000 runners drawn from 25 different countries.
Also in attendance in the event which will be marking its 10th anniversary will be Daniel Kipngetich Komen who currently holds the indoor and outdoor world records for the 3,000 metres steeplechase.
Among other elite runners confirmed will be renowned athletes Paul Tergat, Catherine Ndereba, Robert Cheruiyot and Paralympic gold medalist Henry Wanyoike.
More than 40 corporate teams have confirmed participation in the marathon; these include Safaricom Lions of Lewa, Nokia Siemens, Huawei, DHL, Linksoft Communications, Cementers Ltd, General Motors, Ericsson, Standard Chartered and Safaricom Dealers Association among others.
Safaricom Lions of Lewa corporate team has been the highest fund raiser since inception contributing over Sh25 million.
Since inception nine years ago, the Safaricom Marathon has raised over Shs130 million aimed at supporting needy projects across Kenya. Last year approximately Kshs.30 million was collected.
Local women groups have also benefited by getting funds to initiate small and medium scale enterprises which can uplift their living standards. Boreholes and water tanks have also been put up, from funds raised through the marathon.
