NAIROBI, Kenya, May 4 – Last weekend’s Kenya Premier League (KPL) round was the most exciting with 21 goals scored as the battle for the title intensified.Tusker FC came from behind to register a 3-2 win over struggling AFC Leopards which took them to the top of the table at Coca Cola stadium.
An inspired performance from ‘Ingwe’ was not enough to secure them a second win of the season as the former champions staged a late comeback to clinch a memorable 3-2 victory.
The brewers took the lead through Ugandan import Hassan Mutenza but Leopards striker Sebastian Muchera who was dropped from the Harambee Stars squad earlier this week drew them level.
Skipper Francis Xavier then put his squad in the lead with a penalty soon after the interval but strikes from Nigerian Joseph Emeka and Jerry Santos sealed victory for James Nandwa’s side capping off a spectacular rise up the standings.
So far Tusker have six victories, the most by any team this season so far while Leopards have lost by the same number as well.
Gor Mahia produced the most startling result of the weekend after beating defending champions Mathare United 3-1 on Saturday.
A brace from Duncan Owiti helped ‘Kogalo’ on their way to secure a much needed victory against more fancied opposition and perhaps a say in the most competitive title race in years.
Gor and Tusker are tied in the most goals scored this season with both teams finding the back of the net 14 times.
Mathare are marooned in eighth place on the log and have another testing encounter against high flying Sofapaka on Saturday.
Sofapaka who are well known for their attacking brand of football fired blanks in their barren draw against Sher Karuturi that so them slip one place on the standings from first to second.
Thika United and Nairobi City Stars played out a one all draw at the Thika Municipal stadium in a contest between viable contenders for the title.
Both sides lie fifth and sixth respectively on the log and will head into this weekend’s matches with nothing short of a win in mind.
In other results, KCB drew 2-2 with Red Berets, Ulinzi Stars edged out Chemelil Sugar 2-1.
