LYON, February 26 – Brazilian international striker Fred has terminated his contract with French champions Lyon, who last weekend suspended him from club duties, the club announced on Thursday.
Fred’s contract had been due to expire on June 30 this year, but he will now be able to leave the club with immediate effect.
"Lyon announce that Fred has taken the decision to terminate his contract during his time off in Brazil," the seven-time champions revealed in a statement on their website.
"The termination of his contract with Lyon takes effect this evening and allows him to sign for a Brazilian club."
Fred is expected to join Brazilian first division side Fluminense, who announced two weeks ago that they had reached an agreement with the player.
The 25-year-old signed from Brazilian team Cruzeiro for around 15million euros in August 2005 and has been frozen out at Stade Gerland this season after becoming disillusioned with his lack of playing time.
He has played nine games for Brazil, scoring five goals.
