Thika set the pace


NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – Thika United are perched on top of the Kenya Premier League (KPL) standings after round one of the league which kicked off last weekend.FOOTBALLAbdalla Juma’s side scored the most goals over the weekend by thrashing Coast based side Bandari 3-0 at Thika Munincipal Stadium on Sunday.

Chemelil Sugar and Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) occupy second and third positions respectively with 1-0 victories over Western Stima and Sony Sugar.

Defending champions Mathare United are in seventh position after their match with eight placed Sher Karuturi ended in a barren draw at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Promoted side AFC Leopards and Nairobi City Stars whose encounter at World Hope Centre was abandoned in the 60th minute due to crowd trouble occupy ninth and tenth place respectively.

Stars were leading ‘Ingwe’ 1-0 through a strike by newly signed Jimmy Bageye at the time the match was halted when restless fans invaded the pitch.

Gor Mahia will go into this weekend’s round of matches three places off the bottom after an attritional 1-0 loss to Ulinzi at Greensteads.

The match between Tusker FC and Sofapaka was postponed in respect of former Harambee Stars manager and Tusker CEO Peter Serry who lost his life at the Nakumatt Downtown fire.
