A 92-year-old woman has confessed to eating a kilogram of sand every day and insists she enjoys perfect health.
Sudama Devi, 92 – from Kajri Noorpur in India – has followed the peculiar diet for 80 years and ate four plates of sand on her wedding night – yet has never been ill.
She began the ritual at the age of 10 when she was dared to eat sand by friends but she soon began to crave it and now can eat it dry, dips her fruit in it, and dilutes it with water.
She told Boston Newstime: “I eat sand daily, about one kilogram and three or four times in a day. My economic condition is not good but I am fond of eating a good and healthy diet.”
Sudama has may have a disorder called pica, that produces a craving for non-foodstuffs. People with the disorder have been known to nibble on dirt, soap, sponges, rock and even glass.
