Residents of Shenzhen in China’s Guangdong province were left shocked when the sea suddenly turned blood red overnight.
Residents of Shenzhen in China’s Guangdong province feared the worst when the sea changed colour overnight, the Daily Express newspaper reports.
Some worried a shark had attacked a human whilst others nervously made links to the biblical text where the sea turns blood red marking the End of The World.
However, the sudden colour change was actually down to algae blooms, which change to a deep red or dark brown when they reproduce in large numbers.
Kang Ts’ai, a local environment officer said: “Although it is harmless, we have nevertheless slapped a ban on any swimming or watersports in the area until the algae is swept back out to sea.”
