The past few days have seen Mavuno Church take a barrage of fire for their blurred lines photo. Now to all the Mavuno critics, I am not validating Mavuno or condemning them. I however know that nudes and semi nudes have been used in Church history ever since we can remember. I don’t see anyone shaking a fist at the Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, which is way more “vulgar” and lewd compared to Mavuno’s blurred lines poster.
So this is my social experiment, if you get angry at Mavuno’s blurred lines but not at the below baroque and renaissance art which were all commissioned by the church you’re a hypocrite. If you dint know that such art has been a part of church history then you have to admit to ignorance. So pick your cup, hypocrisy or ignorance. Better yet let’s hear your rebuttal for why you shake a fist at Mavuno but not At Bernini’s Rape of Proserpina.
I guess just like Mavuno’s poster had a particular target audience, the above art pieces may seem offensive to some people but the church must have commissioned them to communicate to a particular target audience who appreciate their message.
