I said it once and forgive me if I find it necessary to insist, “Only real music will last. All this other less conscious music is here today and gone tomorrow.”
And whenever I mention this, one Urban-soul singer/ song writer jumps into my mind; Fena Gitu a.k.a Fenamenal.
She has the unique ability to fuse an array of genres, from mainstream sounds like hip hop and reggae to eccentric ones like house music, neo-soul and afro-soul. Not a mere fete if any of you have tried to shift from a particular music style to another. Jack of many trades and a master of sound is what I call her.
Having grown up in a musical household, Fena developed her passion for music at a tender age. In 2008 she won the Fete de La Musique competition at Alliance Francaise, marking the beginning of a bright musical career.
Ever since she has briskly strode towards success with her one of a kind performances and most recently, with the release of her much anticipated album “Fenamenon”, a witticism of the words “Fena and Phenomenon”.
The album was received more than warmly impressing crowds all over the continent including sentiments from South African rapper HHP, who termed it as “Classic”!
Her single “Jabulani”, off the same album proved the most favourite, getting massive airplay from local radio to international stations. A few weeks ago she graced the Coke Studio stage alongside Nigeria’s Olamide and Kenya’s Kevin Provoke giving birth to a startling live performance.
She previously flew to London in the company of female rappers Xtatic and Wangechi for a four day global summit focused on ending Sexual Violence and conflict.
Do you now believe she is indeed a phenomenal lady? Diversity and perfection in all her endeavors, she conquers every field a music note after the other.
How about you turn things up a notch this afternoon with her song, “Jabulani”. Watch it in the link below and keep it Mdundo!
