The 87-year-old monarch treated her employees at Buckingham Palace to the free alcohol on Friday lunchtime (26.07.13) to mark the arrival of her great-grandson – who was born last Monday (22.07.13) – and similar parties also took place at Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace, her Scottish residence.
One courtier told the Sunday Express newspaper: “The queen is on Cloud Nine at the moment and wanted to share her happiness with her hard-working staff, so the obvious thing to do was to get out the champers.”
Staff were invited to come and enjoy a “glass of champagne” to celebrate the “royal birth” in the palace’s dining room between 11:30am and 1:30pm, but the two-hour free drinks party turned into an all-day session for some servants who had the afternoon off.
Another employee added to the Sunday Express newspaper: “We were all invited to have a glass of champagne in the staff dining room but when we saw we could be there for two hours we obviously wanted to have a few.
“Everyone was in a fantastic mood and we all toasted the baby, the parents and the queen. It was a fabulous gesture of her and everyone appreciated it.
“She was going up to Balmoral for her annual holidays so lots of staff were knocking off for the season. There was a demob atmosphere and a few people got the taste, so several went on to the pub afterwards.
“It turned into quite a party because no one had to go back to work. Everyone is so happy for the royals and especially the queen.
“We have never seen her looking so happy and content.”
What’s more, people who wish to celebrate in their own homes can check out the ‘Oh Baby!’ playlist created by digital music service Radio.
The songlist includes several royal baby-related tracks including Prince’s ‘Baby, I’m A Star’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘Always Be My Baby’.
