President Kenyatta consoles Eunice Wambui, widow of of the late Joseph Kamotho and family members\/PSCU<\/p><\/div>MATHIOYA, Kenya, Dec 17 President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto Wednesday led thousands of mourners in bidding farewell to the late Joseph John Kamotho, one of the country’s greatest politicians.<\/p>\n

The veteran politician was laid to rest at his rural home in Mathioya, Murang’a County.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Paying tribute to the late Kamotho, President Kenyatta described him as a principled and selfless leader who made a lot of sacrifices in his service to the nation.<\/p>\n

The President challenged all leaders to emulate the late Kamotho by working hard to unite Kenyans and avoid wrangles, which add no value to the nation.<\/p>\n

“Let’s be people who will be remembered for the good we have done and not wrangles we have brought to the nation,” said President Kenyatta.<\/p>\n

The Head of State pointed out that despite wielding immense political power – holding key positions both in the Government and in the then ruling party, KANU – Kamotho was never associated with any scandal.<\/p>\n

“Kamotho was a principled person and never joined politics for his personal benefit but rather to serve Kenyans selflessly,” said the President.<\/p>\n

He noted that even in very challenging political moments, the late Kamotho respected other leaders and never abused any of his political opponents.<\/p>\n

“The former Minister and Kanu Secretary General was a hero who viewed the country to be bigger than his constituency. He never practiced politics of ethnicity but regarded Kenya as one nation and one people,” the President said.<\/p>\n

Saying Kenyans are not interested in retrogressive politics, President Kenyatta assured Murang’a residents and leaders that he will work with them to complete development projects initiated by the late politician.<\/p>\n

Deputy President Ruto challenged leaders and public servants to emulate the late Kamotho by practicing servant leadership.<\/p>\n

“The late Kamotho proved that it is possible to leave a rich legacy and a great name without abusing power and misusing public resources,” the Deputy said.<\/p>\n

He said the late Kamotho was one of the most effective and efficient political party administrators Kenya has ever had.<\/p>\n

In his condolence message ready by Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, retired President Daniel arap Moi said the late Kamotho was a true gallant son of Kenya who sacrificed his personal comfort to ensure unity of the nation.<\/p>\n

“The late Kamotho was an energetic, thoughtful and indefatigable public servant and a man who contributed immensely in making KANU a robust system in the service of the people,” said retired President Moi in his message.<\/p>\n

Former Cabinet Minister Noah Wekesa recalled, with nostalgia, the way the late Kamotho ensured that KANU was not only an active party during elections but remained relevant at all times.<\/p>\n

Wekesa and Senator Moi thanked President Kenyatta for ordering the National Cereals and Produce Board to open up its silos and purchase grains from maize farmers.<\/p>\n

They, however, requested the Government to give good prices to maize farmers to ensure they do not sell their produce at a loss.<\/p>\n

Local leaders led by Governor Mwangi wa Iria urged Kenyans to follow the example of the late Kamotho by committing themselves to giving quality service to their country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
