{"id":785115,"date":"2025-11-19T17:05:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-19T14:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/?p=785115"},"modified":"2025-11-20T10:57:41","modified_gmt":"2025-11-20T07:57:41","slug":"eu-undersea-cable-investment-africa-indo-pacific-digital-connectivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/2025\/11\/eu-undersea-cable-investment-africa-indo-pacific-digital-connectivity\/","title":{"rendered":"EU targets Africa\u2013Indo-Pacific digital expansion with major undersea cable push"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 19 \u2014 The European Union is stepping up efforts to expand secure digital connectivity across Africa and the Indo-Pacific through major investments in undersea cable infrastructure\u2014an initiative officials say is critical for economic growth, maritime security, and global stability.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking virtually from Brussels to journalists in Nairobi, a Senior EU official said secure and resilient sub-sea networks have become essential as global digital dependence deepens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDigital connectivity has become a key element for development and for economic growth,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe also need to listen to what partners have to say because for some of our Indo-Pacific partners, this digital connectivity is about putting cables to develop regions, spur the economy and bring growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senior EU official was briefing journalists ahead of the 4th EU\u2013Indo-Pacific Ministerial Forum, set for November 20\u201321 in Brussels, which will bring together about 70 delegations from both regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maritime and digital infrastructure will feature prominently, alongside discussions on security, economic resilience, and sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis key critical maritime infrastructure will merit in the forum a particular discussion,\u201d the official noted, adding that the meeting will be followed by a high-level event on protecting critical maritime infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official emphasized the EU\u2019s commitment to strengthening political engagement, saying the forum provides \u201ca very good platform at a very high level for bilateral and multilateral discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-research-and-innovation\">Research and innovation <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU underscored research and innovation as central to the EU\u2019s deepening partnership with Indo-Pacific countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have adopted agreements for countries to become associated to Europe\u2019s big programme of research and innovation,\u201d the official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cResearch and innovation is very important for all transition towards digital economies, towards more sustainable economies. We need to enhance more cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official cited the EU\u2013Africa\u2013India digital corridor, an 11,700 km sub-sea cable, as a flagship example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The system will connect Europe to India via the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Eastern Africa\u2014linking more than 10,000 European research institutions to over 3,700 in India and Southeast Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While undersea cables carry over 95 per cent of global international data, the envoy warned that expanding infrastructure without adequate protection would be risky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to lay more cables and not think about protection, which is also very important,\u201d the senior official said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we don\u2019t protect these cables, they can be part of sabotage or threats, and the cost of that is certainly a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-unsecured-subsea-networks\">Unsecured subsea networks <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Europe has already experienced the consequences of unsecured sub-sea networks and is now working to strengthen global rules under the law of the sea framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EU Ambassador to Kenya Henriette Geiger said Kenya stands to benefit significantly from the EU\u2019s Global Gateway connectivity agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The planned cable route will extend from Italy through Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania, forming part of a broader Indo-Pacific and East African digital expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis demonstrates the EU\u2019s commitment to delivering sustainable, high-quality digital infrastructure,\u201d Geiger said, noting the involvement of governments and private-sector partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ministerial Forum\u2014co-chaired by European Commission Executive Vice-President Kaja Kallas and Danish Foreign Affairs Minister Lars L\u00f8kke Rasmussen\u2014will focus on three themes namely; Security and Defence, Shared Prosperity, Economic Security, and Sustainable Future and Green Agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EU officials say discussions will build on progress made since the bloc launched its Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nairobi, Geiger said the forum comes at a time of global uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe current global landscape\u2014marked by geopolitical shifts, economic uncertainty, and accelerating climate challenges\u2014requires collective action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Brussels based official echoed the sentiment, calling it \u201ca very special geopolitical moment with a lot of
