NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 19 \u2014 Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has pledged unwavering loyalty to President William Ruto, declaring that the late opposition leader Raila Odinga had finally found a \u201csincere partner\u201d in Ruto after decades of what he termed \u201craw deals\u201d in previous political alliances.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during the national funeral service for Odinga at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST) in Bondo \u2014 an event attended by President Ruto, former top government officials, and foreign dignitaries \u2014 Wandayi vowed to honor the late leader\u2019s wish for unity and collaboration under the newly formed broad-based government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Energy CS said Odinga had personally urged him to serve the country diligently and support the current administration fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe told me he had been in many political arrangements and partnerships, but he had come to learn that President William Ruto is sincere,\u201d Wandayi revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe also told me that you [Ruto] have demonstrated to him utmost goodwill. The only lasting tribute we can pay to Baba and perpetuate his legacy is to strengthen the partnership he began with President William Ruto.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wandayi contrasted Ruto\u2019s partnership with Odinga\u2019s previous alliances \u2014 with former Presidents Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta \u2014 saying the ODM leader often emerged shortchanged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are people who have worked with Baba before, but all that time he ended up with the short end of the stick \u2014 a raw deal,\u201d Wandayi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must applaud you, Your Excellency, on this day as we bid farewell to Baba, because you have done us proud as a community and as a nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CS delivered an emotional tribute to his mentor, describing Odinga as a father figure, advisor, and role model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBaba was many things to me \u2014 my father figure, mentor, advisor, and role model,\u201d Wandayi said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEarlier this year, Raila visited me in my office and told me to work for the country selflessly and support the government fully.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Ruto expanded his Cabinet to include several senior ODM figures, in what he described as a \u201cbroad-based government of national renewal\u201d following a March deal with Raila.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those appointed were ODM Chairman John Mbadi as Treasury Cabinet Secretary, former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho as Mining CS, and former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya as Cooperatives Development Minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wandayi himself, who previously served as National Assembly Minority Leader, was nominated to head the Energy Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The appointments followed weeks of Gen Z\u2013led protests demanding accountability, reforms, and inclusivity \u2014 unrest that Ruto said underscored the need for \u201cunity of purpose and shared responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis country has gone through a difficult public conversation,\u201d the President said at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must now come together to secure opportunities for all and advance national prosperity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At Odinga\u2019s funeral, Wandayi echoed that sentiment, saying the new partnership between ODM and the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition was not a betrayal but a continuation of Raila\u2019s mission for justice, inclusivity, and unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, his remarks come amid deepening internal rifts within ODM. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Party Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and Siaya Governor James Orengo have both cautioned against diluting the party\u2019s independence, warning that cooperation with the ruling coalition must not erode its ideological foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven as we speak about unity, let us not kill political parties,\u201d Orengo said in his eulogy. \u201cThey are the foundation of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
