NAIROBI, Kenya July 21 \u2013 A call by Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga for protests to continue on day three Friday appears to have been unheeded as Kenyans went about their business in most parts of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Nairobi, most shops re-opened business and the public transport system was back to normal as was the case in Nakuru, Mombasa and Kisii which were most affected since Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police patrols were, however, visible on various streets, accompanied by National Youth Service (NYS) personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the lakeside city of Kisumu, business was slowly getting back to normalcy as some of the shops opened in town although disturbances were visible at Nyamasaria and Kondele areas where groups of youth converged. Police watched from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am urging my supporters to go on with the protests because Friday is the grand finale,” Odinga declared Thursday, when he spoke to NTV, explaining his absence from the protests since Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am nursing a terrible flu but I am getting better,\u201d he said in the interview explaining his conspicuous absence from the three-day anti-government protests he mobilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 9 people have been killed and more than 300 arrested since Wednesday when the protests started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki said the suspects-many of them in Nairobi- have been charged with various offences, including unlawful assembly and destruction of property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kindiki says the government has managed to suppress the protests and urged the public to go on with their businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe public is hereby informed that the wave of hooliganism, disruption of order and lawlessness that began on Wednesday has been fully contained and the country has returned to normalcy,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was normalcy in Nairobi on July 21, 2023 despite a call by Azimio leader Raila Odinga for more protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Odinga has vowed the protests will proceed Friday and urged his supporters to turn up, saying he must not be there for protests to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe protests are for all Kenyans, it is not about me or Azimio leaders so even if we are not present they proceed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenyans largely ignored a call by the opposition to boost anti-government protests on Thursday, although isolated clashes flared in the capital between police and stone-throwing demonstrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police fired tear gas and live rounds at protesters in Nairobi\u2019s Kibera slum, an opposition stronghold, but no violence was reported elsewhere in contrast to earlier demonstrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga called for three days of demonstrations this week, with Wednesday\u2019s protests claiming six lives according to Amnesty International\u2019s\u00a0Kenya\u00a0chapter, which said it had cross-checked the toll with victims\u2019 families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since March, 20 people have died in the demonstrations, according to figures released by the government and hospitals, and the unrest has alarmed Kenyans and the international community alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President William Ruto on Thursday repeated his call for a halt to the demonstrations, saying they were \u201cnot a solution to the problems of Kenyans\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Odinga says Ruto\u2019s government is illegitimate and responsible for a cost-of-living crisis and had urged Kenyans to show up in large numbers on Thursday, tweeting: \u201cThe voice of the People must be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But no major demonstrations were reported on Thursday, apart from skirmishes in Kibera, where police clashed with protesters, while some residents armed with sticks stood guard to prevent burglaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYesterday, five shops were looted in this area, we are here to avoid that happening today, we are tired of it,\u201d said Jacob Anyango, 45.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Mombasa, demonstrators engaged police in running battles on July 19, 2023 during protests against the high cost of living which was banned by the government.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Schools in Nairobi and the opposition bastions of Kisumu and Mombasa reopened, with the interior ministry assuring Kenyans that it had taken \u201cadequate measures to guarantee the safety and security of learners\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nairobi\u2019s business district, which was largely shuttered on Wednesday, also went back to work, with stores reopening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe shop was closed yesterday because there was a lot of tension, and we felt people can take advantage of the situation to loot,\u201d said mobile phone salesman Peter Wangui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
