The two will spend seven to ten days together during which period they will hardly move from their current location,\u201d Ole Polos explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey will occasionally join the pride for meals and return. This period is characterised by frequent mating,\u201d he adds, noting that the lion may not necessarily be the father of the cubs given the highly promiscuous nature of lionesses who lure their mates with prey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technology-led conservation <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Borana has developed automated systems to monitor the movements of the carnivores and other endangered species in the savannah including through periodic geo-tracking using advanced wireless networks such as the GPRS embedded in walkie-talkies assigned to its rangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Military-grade GPRS forms part of technology deployed to monitor lion movements particularly when they veer off the conservancy into human settlements as part of efforts to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the base camp, LCA Grants Manager Moses Nokisho illustrates the use of the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) to report the location of lions and rhinos on a 24-hour cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-725763\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY-600x337.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2023\/05\/RHINO-BORANA-CONSERVERNCY.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Two rhinos browse through a valley at the Borana Conservancy. \u00a9 CFM\/Jeremiah Wakaya<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve mapped the conservancy into four sectors each assigned three rangers who report on activities within their domain,\u201d he says, pointing to a 32-inch display dotted with coordinates showing the movements of rangers in the conservancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis system sends a ping (signal) every minute reporting the location of its bearer (the ranger). We\u2019re able to check the area covered by the ranger and the last sighting of any species of interest,\u201d Nokisho adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Borana\u2019s web of tracking technology is entirely offgrid, powered by solar energy produced at the camp.
