{"id":701495,"date":"2022-10-12T12:05:48","date_gmt":"2022-10-12T09:05:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/?p=701495"},"modified":"2022-10-12T12:05:53","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T09:05:53","slug":"english-winemakers-toast-summer-heatwaves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/2022\/10\/english-winemakers-toast-summer-heatwaves\/","title":{"rendered":"English winemakers toast summer heatwaves"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><i>Appledore, United Kingdom, Oct 12 &#8211; <\/i>Under a blue sky, seasonal workers ran their secateurs along long rows of grapevines, harvesting a variety of pinot noir grown during the summer heatwave.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This was not a village in France, however, but Appledore in Kent in southern England, where high temperatures needed to grow the grape variety are no longer rare.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;At the moment, I think we have similar growing conditions to Champagne in the (19)70s and 80s,&#8221; said Charlie Holland, head winemaker and chief executive at Gusbourne Estate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re seeing the same sort of growth conditions, the same ripening period&#8221; in England as back then in France, he added.<\/p>\n<p>That is good news for Britain&#8217;s embryonic viticulture which is now able to produce a wide variety of still and sparkling wines from grape varieties including pinot noir, chardonnay and riesling that are traditionally more accustomed to France and Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not so often that you see a new wine region appearing on the map,&#8221; said Holland.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In England, now we can make an exceptional sparkling wine, we have a perfect climate, we have a very long growing season.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;Quite frightening&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>At Gusbourne Estate, tractors were transporting baskets full of grapes to the winery. The fruit was immediately destemmed and pressed to begin the fermentation process.<\/p>\n<p>During the harvest period, the estate is a beehive of 200 workers, more than half of them seasonal.<\/p>\n<p>Holland was everywhere, darting between presses, vats and oak barrels as he inspected and tasted the produce.<\/p>\n<p>Climate change may be helping England&#8217;s vineyards for now but the fast pace of transition risks major planning difficulties, warned Alistair Nesbitt, co-author of an outlook study on the country&#8217;s winemaking industry.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_701493\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-701493\" class=\"size-full wp-image-701493\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/9660cc6bd1f8041f3fd10bef4b4c2c6253c895bf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/9660cc6bd1f8041f3fd10bef4b4c2c6253c895bf.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/9660cc6bd1f8041f3fd10bef4b4c2c6253c895bf-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-701493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">While growing, UK vineyards are however dwarfed on the international stage, covering a total of 3,800 hectares &#8212; or about one tenth of France&#8217;s champagne-producing region \u00a9 <b>AFP \/ Ben Stansall<\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s a really quite frighteningly short period of time to have such a transition of varietals suitability, and that really shows the pace of change that certain areas of the UK are starting to see as a result of climate change,&#8221; he noted.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully the world will get (its) act together and we won&#8217;t see that continuing increase for too much longer, because that&#8217;s threatening to everyone, including producers in the UK,&#8221; added Nesbitt, who is chief executive of consultancy Vinescapes.<\/p>\n<p>Nesbitt forecasts that beyond 2040, England&#8217;s vineyards could be working with grape varieties found further south in France, such as merlot and cabernet sauvignon.<\/p>\n<p>This assumes that climate change continues on its expected path amid global reductions in carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8216;Niche producer&#8217; &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Britain&#8217;s wine growers are planting grapes in droves to meet booming demand at home and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The surface area of vineyards in the country has doubled in eight years, according to industry organisation WineGB.<\/p>\n<p>UK vineyards are however dwarfed on the international stage, covering a total of 3,800 hectares &#8212; or about one tenth of France&#8217;s champagne-producing region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_701494\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-701494\" class=\"size-full wp-image-701494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/0fe01f63aa9c256dce6080205d3b9d12c8df3faf.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/0fe01f63aa9c256dce6080205d3b9d12c8df3faf.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2022\/10\/0fe01f63aa9c256dce6080205d3b9d12c8df3faf-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-701494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The rapid pace of climate change could see Britain planting grape varieties currently grown in southern France after 20 years \u00a9 <b>AFP \/ Ben Stansall<\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Britain &#8220;will likely remain a niche wine producer&#8221;, said Daniel Mettyear, research director at consultancy IWSR Drinks Market Analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the relatively high price &#8212; \u00a345 ($50) for one of Gusbourne&#8217;s sparkling wines &#8212; demand is growing both in Britain and abroad for the drink.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Quality has improved significantly in recent years,&#8221; added Mettyear, noting strong interest from North American and Nordic countries, as well as from Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Gusbourne exports about one third of its wine to 28 nations worldwide, mostly to Norway but also to France.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Appledore, United Kingdom, Oct 12 &#8211; Under a blue sky, seasonal workers ran their secateurs along long rows of grapevines, harvesting a variety of pinot noir grown during the summer heatwave.
