NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – A taxi driver who was kidnapped from Mwiki estate three weeks ago has been found murdered and his mutilated body dumped behind the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Police say they found 26-year-old Nicholas Mutembei Thuranira’s body after a suspect who had been arrested soon after the disappearance took them to the site.<\/p>\n

“After thorough investigations and interrogation, the suspect revealed that they murdered this man who was kidnapped.  He later offered to take the police to the place where the body was dumped,” Kasarani divisional police Chief Leonard Omolo said.<\/p>\n

“The body had been cut into two parts and buried. But part of the body was not completely covered. We were able to exhume it and take it to the mortuary,” Mr Omolo said and added that investigations had pointed to infighting between rival Mungiki gangs.<\/p>\n

He said they suspect the man was killed elsewhere and his disfigured body later buried at the site behind the stadium.<\/p>\n

He described the killing as a “plain murder and they were doing it on a revenge mission. It is the Mungiki who were fighting in Mwiki and Santon area.”<\/p>\n

The police commander said investigations and statements recorded from the suspect had revealed the deceased was a Mungiki follower who had differed with his colleagues.<\/p>\n

“These are Mungiki people, even the one we arrested is Mungiki and he is the one who revealed that there were differences among them over the money being collected,” Mr Omolo said.<\/p>\n

He said detectives were now looking for other suspects who had been named by the one in custody.<\/p>\n

He added that they believed they had made a major breakthrough in investigating a number of murders in Mwiki area.<\/p>\n

“It all happened here in Mwiki between December and January; three people have already been killed here.”<\/p>\n

Mr Omolo said he had intensified security patrols in the area targeting the notorious gang, known for its criminal activities which mainly include murder and extortion.<\/p>\n

“I have given instructions that they be arrested and charged accordingly,” he added.<\/p>\n

Mungiki founder Maina Njenga last year denounced the sect and urged his over five million followers to embrace Christianity.<\/p>\n

He maintains those still calling themselves Mungiki members are masqueraders “who have lost direction.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
