{"id":395117,"date":"2018-07-04T15:08:55","date_gmt":"2018-07-04T12:08:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/?p=395117"},"modified":"2018-07-04T15:08:57","modified_gmt":"2018-07-04T12:08:57","slug":"zimbabwe-army-vows-neutrality-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/2018\/07\/zimbabwe-army-vows-neutrality-election\/","title":{"rendered":"Zimbabwe army vows neutrality in election"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_395116\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-395116\" class=\"size-full wp-image-395116\" src=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2018\/07\/9e8acb49d31f83a4d7448831ded3f189cacc0295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"512\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2018\/07\/9e8acb49d31f83a4d7448831ded3f189cacc0295.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.capitalfm.co.ke\/news\/files\/2018\/07\/9e8acb49d31f83a4d7448831ded3f189cacc0295-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-395116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Zimbabwean army intervened to end Robert Mugabe&#8217;s 37-year rule, ushering in his former right-hand man, Emmerson Mnangagwa &copy; <b>AFP \/ TONY KARUMBA<\/b><\/p><\/div>\n<p><i>Harare, Zimbabwe, Jul 4 &#8211; <\/i>Zimbabwe&#8217;s military vowed on Wednesday to stay neutral in upcoming elections, dismissing suggestions it would deploy service personnel to influence national polls scheduled for July 30. <\/p>\n<p>The military is under close scrutiny following its brief takeover in November that led to the resignation of former president Robert Mugabe. <\/p>\n<p>Previous elections under Mugabe were marred by violence, intimidation and fraud &#8212; often alleged to involve the security forces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Zimbabwe Defence Forces has no direct role in the upcoming elections,&#8221; said army spokesman Overson Mugwisi at a media conference in Harare ahead of the presidential, parliamentary and local polls later this month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are disturbed by false reports alleging that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces is going to be used by (the ruling) ZANU-PF to rig the posted vote.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The army appeared to have staged its media briefing in response to a report in the Standard daily that it had deployed active service personnel to rural areas to campaign for candidates in ZANU-PF primary contests.<\/p>\n<p>The Standard reported that it had received complaints from defeated contenders for the ZANU-PF slate who reported that some winning candidates who were former senior military officers had been &#8220;roping in the army to win the primary elections&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If some serving members are participating in the ongoing political campaigns, they will be doing so illegally and not as a result of an instruction from their commanders,&#8221; said Mugwisi.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The conduct of the Zimbabwe Defence forces after elections is going to be guided by the constitution.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>President Emmerson Mnangagwa, 75, has pledged to hold free and fair elections as he seeks to mend international relations.<\/p>\n<p>July&#8217;s polls will be the first ballot box test for Mnangagwa, and the first since Mugabe was forced to resign after 37 years in power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Harare, Zimbabwe, Jul 4 &#8211; Zimbabwe&#8217;s military vowed on Wednesday to stay neutral in upcoming elections, dismissing suggestions it would deploy service personnel to influence national polls scheduled for July 30.
