NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 23 – Distinguished lawyer Prof Githu Muigai has been nominated to the post of Attorney General to replace Amos Wako who is required to vacate office on Saturday in line with the new Constitution.<\/p>\n
The first time President Mwai Kibaki nominated Prof Muigai to the position in January, it was rejected on grounds that he had failed to observe the law that requires that he consults his coalition partner Prime Minister Raila Odinga before making such an appointment.<\/p>\n
He had nominated Prof Muigai as AG, Alnasir Vishram as Chief Justice and Kioko Kilukumi as Director of Public Prosecutions but he was forced him to withdraw them after public outcry.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the Presidential Press Service sent a statement to newsrooms saying the Head of State had made the fresh nomination in consultation with the Prime Minister.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis Excellency President Mwai Kibaki after consultation with the Rt. Hon Prime Minister Hon Raila Odinga has nominated Prof Githu Muigai for the position of Attorney General,\u201d the brief statement from State House said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis name has now been forwarded to the National Assembly for approval.\u201d<\/p>\n
Prof Muigai\u2019s fate is now in the hands of parliamentarians who are due to debate the nomination before sending recommendations back to the President for formal appointment.<\/p>\n
Analysts have ruled out any possible controversy in the appointment and are now optimistic of a smooth sailing for Prof Muigai.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is no doubt Prof Muigai will sail through this time,\u201d one analyst said.<\/p>\n
Several names had been fronted for the coveted appointment including lawyer Philip Murgor who once served as the Director of Public Prosecutions and Lawyer Fred Ojiambo as well as Betty Murungi.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
