Koome says the disgruntled Opposition leaders have the right to protest, but peacefully\/JOSEPH MURAYA<\/p><\/div>\n

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 9 – Police now say they have intelligence reports that a section of Opposition supporters intend to carry lethal weapons during Monday’s protest at Anniversary Towers against IEBC officials.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Nairobi Police Chief Japheth Koome says those supporters will be treated as criminals.<\/p>\n

“We will not allow a few people to cause violence in the city,” he cautioned.<\/p>\n

Koome says the disgruntled Opposition leaders have the right to protest, but peacefully.<\/p>\n

Only a handful of supporters had arrived outside Anniversary Towers by mid-Monday morning, as anti-riot police and water canon were deployed to stem any chaos.<\/p>\n

“We will not be scared… IEBC must go,” they chanted. Others called for the removal of IEBC Chairperson Issack Hassan.<\/p>\n

“We will get you out of the office,” the supporters were heard saying.<\/p>\n

The previous protest turned chaotic after a section of supporters started hurling stones at police officers.<\/p>\n

CORD leaders led by Raila Odinga were caught up in the melee and had to flee after police lobbed teargas to disperse them.<\/p>\n

The Opposition leaders insist the electoral body must be disbanded while the government has been urging them to use the structured procedures as per the Constitution.<\/p>\n\n\t\t
