NAIROBI, Kenya May 29 – Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula on Monday met with visiting Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The Russian envoy who arrived in Kenya on Monday unannounced paid Speaker Wetang’ula a courtesy call at his office at Parliament buildings in Nairobi.
“We had a lengthy discussion on a myriad of issues touching on bilateral, multilateral, and regional matters aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries,” Speaker Wetang’ula said.
Speaker Wetang’ula also disclosed that talks on “Kenya’s participation at the forthcoming Russia-Africa Summit and Economic Forum slated for July in St. Petersburg” featured during the meeting with the Russian envoy.
“We discussed how we can boost the existing areas of cooperation that include Education, Trade, agriculture, tourism, Health, Science, and Technology among others,” Speaker Wetangu’la said.
The Russia-Africa Summit aims to promote efforts to strengthen comprehensive and equal cooperation between Russia and African nations across all areas of society including politics, security, economic relations, science and technology, and the cultural and humanitarian spheres.
First Russia–Africa Summit took place on October 2019 in Sochi under the motto of ‘For Peace, Security and Development’.
It was the first time such a large-scale event had been held in the history of modern Russia and was unprecedented in Russian–African relations.
The participants afterward identified priority areas of economic cooperation where concrete results could be achieved in the coming years.
The Russian envoy is later expected to meet with President William Ruto for bilateral talks.
