President Ruto in UK attending coronation of Charles III as King

NAIROBI, Kenya May 6 – President William Ruto is among the world leaders attending the coronation of Charles III, who is set to be crowned King on Saturday in London, United Kingdom.

President Ruto is attending the historic event at Westminster Abbey as a courtesy of the King’s invitation.

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed confirmed that President Ruto flew out of the country on Friday to attend the solemn Christian ceremony, which is steeped in 1,000 years of history and tradition.

“At the invitation of the King, President Ruto will attend the historic event to be held at Westminster Abbey and presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby,” Mohamed said.

The coronation — the first of a king since 1937, only the second to be televised and the first in color and streamed online — is the religious confirmation of Charles’s accession.

Charles, 74, has been king since the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022 after seven decades as her heir apparent.

St Edward’s Crown — a solid gold, sacred symbol of the monarch’s authority used only once in their reign — will be placed on Charles’s head at 2.00 p.m to cries of “God Save the King”.

Following the coronation, President Ruto is scheduled to visit The Netherlands on Sunday for a series of bilateral meetings, including a meeting with His Majesty King Willem-Alexander, the King of the Netherlands.

“During the visit, Kenya and the Netherlands will explore new areas of cooperation and strengthen existing partnerships between the two countries in critical areas such as trade and investment, development cooperation, and multilateral fora,” Mohamed said.

The President is scheduled to tour various agricultural projects in the Middle East country known for its remarkable achievements in irrigation. Besides, he will hold a meeting with the Israeli business community to present investment opportunities and seek their partnership in Kenya.
