KDF, NPS alliance in bandit-hit counties delivering results: Kindiki

Kindiki expressed confidence in the specialized and highly trained officers deployed in Baringo, saying that they possess the skills necessary to deal with the most complicated of crimes.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 30 — Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has said that the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service are working together and seamlessly to ensure that the ongoing operation against the bandits in the North Rift succeeds.

Speaking Saturday when he visited a joint command post at Chemolingot in Baringo County, the Interior CS maintained that security agencies will set up permanently in the area even after the end of the multi-agency operation to ensure peace is upheld.

Kindiki confirmed that he had reached an agreement with his Defense counterpart, Aden Duale, to ensure that the specialized equipment owned by the KDF and their expertise are also utilized to achieve long-lasting peace in the North Rift.

He added that although the KDF is primarily tasked with maintaining external security, the law allows them to assist other security agencies when necessary.

“We have agreed with the military that they will support us with the equipment that either the Ministry of Interior, the police or the county government do not have so that we can open up this area,” he said.

Shared experience

Kindiki expressed confidence in the specialized and highly trained officers deployed in Baringo, saying that they possess the skills necessary to deal with the most complicated of crimes.

He warned remnants of criminal cartel wreaking havoc in the North Rift that their time is up, noting that the government will deal with them ruthlessly.

“With the investment made by the government, in specialised personnel and equipment, the armed criminals and bandits have nowhere to hide,” he added.

While commenting on the progress of the operation, Kindiki revealed that the gorges, ravines, escarpments and hills where the armed criminals and bandits were hiding are no longer their territory.

“We have flushed them out and our security officers have taken over there. And I want to assure you, those criminals will never be allowed back there,” he said.

Kindiki urged leaders from the North Rift, including West Pokot and Baringo County, to collaborate in setting up development projects such as schools as a long-term solution to peaceful co-existence.

He revealed plans to establish five schools in Kerio Valley to allow children from Pokot and Marakwet to attend school together as part of efforts to eventually end hostilities.

Kindiki called on the leaders to quickly come up with a proposal for the establishment of schools, assuring them of the government’s financial support to finance the project.

“We may not build all of them together but we want to start the project immediately and I hope we can come here by June next month or July latest and lay the foundation stone for the project,” he added.
