KISUMU, Kenya, Mar 19 — A peaceful demonstration by government-allied protestors in Kisumu turned chaotic on Sunday after a group loyal to Raila Odinga repulsed the processions causing a confrontation between the two camps.
The pro-government demonstrators were championing for peace ahead of a planned Azimio rally in Nairobi on Monday.
Benard Odinga, who led the pro-government protest, said they are against the planned mass action on Monday which he said was aimed at crippling the economy.
“This team comprises of people from across the four counties in Luo Nyanza abd we’re tired of these endless demonstrations,” he said.
The demonstrators converged at Russia grounds before marching along Jomo Kenyatta highway.
However, they were repulsed at the city’s bus terminus after coming under attack by a group believed to be supporters of Odinga.
With stones flying from different directions, the peaceful march came to an end.
By the time anti-riot police responded, protestors had dispersed.
Odinga’s supporters who spoke to Capital News said their were “fighting for justice”.
