Govt releases Sh2.7bn University HELB loans to 180, 000 students

NAIROBI, Kenya Feb 4 – The government has released Sh2.7 billion for University loans and bursaries for 180, 000 university students.

The Education Cabinet Secretary, Ezekiel Machogu said Treasury had sent the funds to the Higher Education Loan Board (HELB) for further disbursement to eligible students.

“The Education Ministry is aware that the majority of Government sponsored students in our public and private universities are preparing to sit their end-of-semester examinations for the 2022/2023 academic calendar,” Machogu said.

He instructed all universities to give all beneficiaries the chance to take their end-of-semester exams as planned.

“I, therefore, wish to assure all the affected students that they will be eligible for registration ahead of the examinations,” he said.

University students through the  Kenya University Student Organisation (KUSU) had in September 2022 petitioned President William Ruto to intervene over the delays in the disbursement of the funds.
