Vaginal rejuvenation gains prominence as more women pursue sexual wellbeing

Dr. Sukhija explains that the vaginal rejuvenation treatment tackles lack of tightness in the vagina, urinary incontinence, absence of lubrication among other concerns.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 11 — Vaginal rejuvenation treatments are increasingly becoming popular among women seeking to better their sexual lives especially after childbirth or age, which affect a woman’s sense of well-being and sexuality.

Dr. Sarita Sukhija, a gynaecologist consultant and fertility expert who runs Myra Fertility Clinic in Westlands, says that since vagina is an elastic muscle, it can expand due to childbirth and age.

“It expands in childbirth for obvious reasons, as a woman needs to push out the baby,” she states.

“But with age, there are changes in hormones that reduce the strength of the muscle and the surrounding connective tissues. As such, the vagina may lose elasticity. The vaginal walls can become thin due to a lack of estrogen, making one feel a change in diameter.”

According to Dr. Sukhija, that’s where vaginal rejuvenation comes in.

Dr. Sukhija explains that the vaginal rejuvenation treatment tackles lack of tightness in the vagina, urinary incontinence, absence of lubrication among other concerns.

“After two or three vaginal deliveries, most women may find that their vagina hasn’t returned to its original size, even if it contracts it is still loose and their partners complain. Through the vaginal rejuvenation treatments they may be able to have their vaginal walls and tissues tightened,” Dr. Sukhija states.

She notes the procedure can also help treat urinary incontinence especially post birth, where some women experience urine leak when they cough, laugh or sneeze.

The gynacologist explains that some patients may require between two to three sessions depending on the severity of their situation, so as to attain better results.

Dr. Sukhija who is passionate about women’s health has practised in India for 15 years before coming to Kenya where she has been consulting for the last two years.

She says she saw the need to have a women’s clinic with all fertility services under one roof, and that’s how she came up with the Myra fertility clinic.

“My passion has been on fertility and how best we can give our patients the best services. I established this center last year and I have seen the need,” she adds.

Dr. Sukhija said the clinic is not at the moment offering vaginal rejuvenation treatments, but noted that they have received a lot of inquiries from women who want the service.

She however said that they are at the final stages of acquiring the required equipment for conducting the treatments, which will be offered at the Myra Clinic starting this year.

Her treatment approach would be the non-surgical procedure, which involves two common methods. One is using radio frequency and the other using the laser.

“We have a lot of requests from women who want to tighten their Vaginas and starting April this year we will have the full fledged laser facility for conducting the procedure, women will be able to access the treatment at considerate rates,” she said.

The clinic will charge between Sh50,000 to Sh60,000 for the laser treatment.

How is the laser treatment done?

A laser probe is inserted into the vagina, and it can rotate 360 degrees. The light can penetrate the vaginal epithelium and reach the tissue, which can produce new collagen. It is painless and requires zero downtime or anesthesia. Patients can resume their day to day activities post the procedure.

Doctors advise patients to abstain for at least five days, and nothing should be inserted in the vagina over the same duration.

She pointed out that laser treatment is painless and requires zero downtime or anesthesia.

“The beauty about this procedure is that it’s painless and a patient can go on with their lives normally after the treatment,” she said.

She recommended that women should wait for at least a year post birth, so as to seek vaginal rejuvenation treatments.

Vaginal rejuvenation can also be done through a surgical procedure whose options include vaginoplasty, labiaplasty, and vulvoplasty. This is performed under regional or local anesthesia.
