Lobby wants DPP to prefer double murder charge against three suspects over botched surgery in Mathare

Nairobi, Kenya, Jan 5 – CitizenGO, a non-profit organization focused on fostering real political change now wants the Directorate of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji to prefer double murder charges against three suspects over botched surgery.

The three are accused of conducting an illegal abortion which resulted in the death of a woman in Mathare.

Ann Kioko, Campaigns Director for Africa and the UN at CitizenGO called on the DPP to charge the three suspects including the victim’s husband with double murder.

The lobby questioned why the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) singled out the death of the mother but not the child.

“We have learned through the DCI-Kenya Twitter page of the heinous crime committed against the wife of Mr. Richard Onyango and their child. While we commend you for your quick action against the perpetrators, we are appalled that you only mention a single murder,” Kioko said.

“The constitution of Kenya in Article 26 affirms that life begins at conception. Together with the penal code, they declare abortion to be murder and a crime punishable by law. We, therefore, demand that the above-mentioned perpetrators be charged with double murders as we seek justice for both mother and her pre-born child,” she added.

The suspects included the victim’s husband and two suspected quack doctors who are accused of conducting the failed operation.

The three were apprehended after intensive investigations by detectives based at DCI Starehe, who stumbled upon the lifeless body of a middle-aged woman along Outering road on New Year’s Eve.

“The body which had been wrapped in a white bedsheet was discovered dumped in a stormwater tunnel near Shell petrol station along the busy road, with preliminary findings indicating that the body may have been murdered elsewhere and dumped at the scene by unknown persons,” the DCI said.

According to the agency, the officers got wind that the body had been disposed at the scene after a botched operation conducted by a suspected quack doctor identified as Richard Orambo, who operates a clinic known as Watergate Medical Centre at Mathare Area 1.

“The quack in consultation with another rogue doctor Francis Messo who runs Busanzi health clinic in Dandora phase 4, had tried in vain to procure the abortion but when the patient developed complications, they opted to rush her to another backstreet clinic in Kiambu,” the agency stated.

According to the DCI, it is while on their way to Kiambu that the patient lost her life and the trio dumped her body in the stormwater tunnel in a bid to cover their tracks.

The three are currently in custody pending arraignment.
