Former President Kenyatta calls for cessation of hostilities in DRC’s North Kivu

MOMBASA, Kenya, Jan 25 – Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has once again called for the cessation of hostilities in Democratic Republic Congo’s North Kivu region, following renewed infightings.

The reported infighting is said to be between various armed groups, the Armed Forces of the Republic of Congo (FADRC) and the M23, just a month after the Nairobi meeting on the DRC peace talks.

Kenyatta, also the East African Community Facilitator on Wednesday called for adherence to the agreements made in Luanda process that focuses on Kinshasa’s diplomatic issues with other nations, and the Nairobi peace process aimed at bringing lasting peace to eastern DRC.

“EAC facilitator H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta has expressed deep concern over the sharply deteriorating situation in the North Kivu region of the DRC. The facilitator has once again called for cessation of all hostilities,” reads a statement from the office of the former President.

Reports indicate that the two days of infighting in the region have been culminated with targeted killings of civilians and thousands of internally displaced people.

The facilitator further urged the DRC government and the international community to step up their support to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) resulting from the hostilities.
