NAIROBI, Kenya Jan 30 – The Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce (KCCC) in collaboration with Confucius Institute at University of Nairobi as well as Anhui Chamber of Commerce in Africa held an event to commemorate the Chinese New Year in Nairobi.
The celebrations brought together about 400 Kenyan and Chinese Entrepreneurs at a Nairobi hotel. The annual spring festival event just like in many other parts of the world, was held to celebrate the beginning of a Chinese New Year. In Chinese zodiac represented by 12 animals, 2023 is the year of Rabbit, seen as a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity.
“The year 2023 is predicted to be a year of hope. The Chamber wishes the people of Kenya and China success and happiness in the new year,” KCCC noted
Speaking during the celebrations in Kenya’s capital, the chairman of the Chamber Mr. Zhuo WU noted that KCCC will “continuously work with the National & County Governments, together with the private sectors in both Kenya and China to promote trade, investments and tourism in Kenya.”
The Chairman also recognized the newly appointed seven Directors of the Chamber who he argued will be instrumental in bringing together Chinese and Kenyan business community to promote business and cultural relations between Kenya and China.
The event was graced by George Macgoye, the Chief of Staff at the Office of the Deputy President, who appreciated the unique role that the Chamber plays in aiding Government’s plan “to grow the Economy while creating jobs to millions of Kenyans.”
On his part, Dr. Tang Jianjun, Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, reiterated Chinese Government’s commitment to boost trade, investment and in-depth development of China-Kenya cultural and tourism cooperation between Kenya and China.
The Director General of African Affairs at Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the decision by the chamber to organize the celebrations and expressed optimism that the event will strengthen the existing friendship between Nairobi and Beijing.
“I hope events like this will strengthen mutual understandings between China and Kenya and make our friendship stronger.,” said Amb. Wu
The Kenya Chinese Chamber of Commerce has over 500 company members from China who have invested in Kenya in various sectors of the economy ranging from Manufacturing, Building and Construction, Healthcare, Tourism, Agriculture, Wholesale & Retail Trade, BPO, Financial Services amongst others.
