NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 1 – Speaker of the National Assembly on Thursday urged diplomacy be given a chance in seeking a lasting resolution in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Speaking when he hosted Ukraine Ambassador to Kenya Andrii Pravendynyk at Parliament Buildings, Wetangula said Kenya looks forward to the end of the Ukraine-Russia conflict as he called upon the two countries to find an amicable solution.
“Conflicts of whatever nature must be resolved in a peaceful and diplomatic manner”, said Speaker Wetang’ula.
The two deliberated on the current situation in Ukraine, particularly the volatile status noting that there was a need for an urgent solution to avert further conflict.
The House Speaker further indicated that Kenya and Ukraine have been collaborating in various sectors including trade and tourism.
Ambassador Andrii Pravendynyk commended the Speaker on his election saying that Kenya has made tremendous progress in the quest for democracy and political maturity.
He passed warm accolades from the Chairperson of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada and indicated that he had visited his predecessor Justin Muturi on Parliamentary diplomacy and engagements.
In addition, they discussed ways of re-igniting Kenya’s ailing agricultural sector in order to alleviate the country’s perennial drought and food insecurity.
During the dialogue, Ambassador Andrii highlighted a prospective Kenya -Ukraine Education Scholarship programme for undergraduate students geared towards knowledge sharing and capacity building in technical and scientific fields.
The Speaker committed to establishing a Kenya –Ukraine Parliamentary Friendship Group to advance the ideals of Parliamentary diplomacy and collaboration.
