Eight in custody for exam malpractice in Transmara

TRANSMARA, Kenya, Dec 7 – A school head in Transmara is in custody with seven others over examination malpractice.

The Principal Osonkoroi Secondary in Transmara West is being questioned together with his Deputy, the school bursar, two police officers, two invigilators and one supervisor over exam related malpractices.

Confirming the incident, Transmara West Deputy County Commissioner Mohamed Hassan Noor said those arrested would be arraigned in court once investigations are completed.

He revealed that Transmara West Sub County security team pounced on them following intelligence reports that they were taking photos of exam papers and circulating them on social media.

He urged stakeholders to adhere to exam regulations warning that the government has set in place mechanisms to sniff out examination cheaters.

“This year the story won’t be the same as the government has put in place necessary machinery to curb examination malpractices. Let those who have been given the responsibility to administer the exam ensure a credible process. Let me ask those who have been in the practice of exam cheating or those who may be tempted to engage in the same to stop as the government will catch up with them,” he warned.

Meanwhile, Transmara West Sub County in-charge of Directorate of Public Prosecutions Hussein Wario confirmed that detectives managed to obtain Chemistry theory paper two with serial numbers 336 and 4105 said to be the paper in circulation on social media as exhibits from the deputy principal’s office.

“We did confiscate five mobile phones from the suspects which helped us establish that the paper had indeed been circulated on social media,” said Wario.

“Therefore, the supervisor will be charged with the offense of disclosing contents of the examination paper or materials to candidates or any other person without lawful authority contrary to section 27 of the Examination Act No. 29 of 2022, as we do more investigations against the other suspects,” he said.
