Suspect impersonating EACC official arrested in Nairobi

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 27 – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested an impersonator who was posing as an investigator and extorting money from individuals purportedly to ‘protect them’ from further investigations.

Ibrahim Ngamau Wangari was cornered by anti-graft detectives along Quivers Lounge, Nairobi on Saturday following an earlier complaint from a Maize miller businessman contracted by the government to supply subsidized maize flour.

He is reported to have attempted to blackmail the miller while claiming to be investigating the Ministry of Agriculture and some suppliers who had secured tender in the ministry.

According to a statement from EACC, the complainant became suspicious when Ngamau changed the initial venue where he was slated to appear before him carrying all required documents including audit reports and bank account statements.

The miller then called in the commission to ascertain whether Ngamau was an EACC official or not.

“Ngamau had “summoned” the complainant to appear before him at EACC Integrity Centre Offices carrying various documents including audit reports and all his bank account statements from January 2022 for inspection. He later changed the venue to Quivers Lounge where he was arrested,” EACC wrote on Saturday.

The Anti-Graft body also noted that there has been an increase in the number of fraudsters impersonating EACC officials and obtaining fraudulent money from members of the public.

The arrest was catalysed by an increasing number of complaints from members of the public.

The commission has however now taken further measures to curb the vice adding that they had already issued each EACC staff with an official identification document.

“To protect the public from such fraudsters, EACC has not only issued its officers with identification documents, which can be verified on request, but also continues to warn Kenyans to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons presenting themselves as EACC investigators,” read a tweet from the commission.

The Commission’s Chief Executive Officer Twalib Mbarak however urged the public to be vigilant insisting that anyone claiming to be a commissioner to identify themselves first.

He also added that they are only obligated to do their summons at their official premises with an alternative of conducting the same in a police station.

“Members of the public are advised to always insist to any person claiming to be an EACC Investigator to first identify themselves and further take note that any interview by EACC is undertaken ONLY at the Commission’s premises or in police stations, and not any other place.”

The suspect was taken to Integrity Centre Police Station, later detained at Kilimani Police Station and will be arraigned in court on Monday to answer charges placed against him.
