IEBC Commissioner Masit boycotts JLAC meeting on removal, moves to court

NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 28 – A commissioner at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commissioner (IEBC) Irene Masit on Monday failed to appear before the National Assembly’s Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) to submit responses on accusations against her.

Four petitioners had filed suits seeking her removal from office for violation of the constitution and incompetence.

Through her lawyer Donald Kipkorir, Masit however stated that the committee has no jurisdictional authority to proceed with hearing the petition.

In a letter presented before the Justice and Legal Affairs committee dated November 28th, Kipkorir mentioned they will be seeking redress on the matter in court.

JLAC Chair George Murugaru said that Masit her appearance before the committee in person had been spent with and that she had until tommorow close of business to respond in written submission.

“The chair said committee will await written submissions and if nothing will be forthcoming, they will consider the matter “as not responded to,” Murugara stated
